You wear many different hats as a make up artist, author & personal coach, what made you want to dive into these specific careers?

They are different but in many ways the same. As a makeup artist, author and personal coach I am able to share my passion bringing out the beauty I see in others. To me it is all the same, just different expressions with the same objective.

In your book “Fearless Beauty: A Women’s Guide to Living Bold, Beautiful & Free.” you tackle the idea beauty, why was it important for you to discuss this topic?

It is an important topic for me to discuss because everywhere around me I see how badly people crave to look and feel beautiful. Even at the expense of permanently damaging or completely losing themselves. I want women to feel empowered by their beauty. And playfully celebrate their uniqueness and freely express it in the world.

As a teen female it’s a constant battle to try to fit into what the media’s idea of “beauty” is, what piece advice would you give to teen girls to embrace their unique beauty?

I don’t know that teens care so much about what the media has to say about whether or not they are beautiful. They are more concerned about whether or not their peers (and the boys) think they are beautiful. Anyone who has ever made a difference for other people, always dared to be different (to be themselves). President Obama, Beyonce, Oprah, Tyra Banks, Bruce Lee, Bill Gates, etc. Continue trying to fit in and you will likely not stand out!

What can we expect from you in the next 5 years?

Another book or 2 is definitely in the works. I’m also working to bring my message to a larger audience so it is possible I will bring my message to a different medium like cable or network television.

Being a teen can be tough when you’re growing up, what was the most vital lesson as a teen you learned that carried into your adult life?

You can’t please everybody so you might as well be pleasing to yourself. Those who get you will stick around and those that don’t won’t.

We’re all about EMPOWERMENT at C.O.R.E Mag, what does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment means to me, building someone up so they CAN do for themselves.

More Than A Bad Day

As you wake up in the morning the only action you are motivated to do is go back to sleep and try to ignore the world. Day after day you feel worse than the day before. You wake up and just go through the actions of life but not a single moment you enjoy. You almost feel as if the entire world is closing in on you and no one understands you. When you mention it to parents or any other adult they shrug it off as normal “teen years syndrome.”

In actuality hundreds of teens suffer from Teen Depression every year. The sad part is that many people do not take it seriously until it’s too late and they have already taken their own life. From bullying to family issues to peer pressure, these all can be causes that may lead to teen depression.

Check out this vid of identify different symptoms and causes If you or a friend may be suffering from depression do not ignore it.

“Whatever you do choose to win,” are the encouraging words of Ciara Elle. This empowered young lady is the founder of the Life Development Agency & author of B.A.I.T. (Believe. Affirm.Inspire.Transcend),  a book of affirmation and encouragement for teens!  She has also created several youth development programs and has successfully served hundreds of children and families since entering the mental health profession six years ago. Motivated by the negative portrayal of women in the media, Ciara went into the field of life coaching and wrote a  self-help book for young women, Go Get It! Ciara  is continuously spreading the word that self growth should be a lifelong journey for  everyone.

Let’s get to know Ciara a little better..

You wear many different hats as an author, behavioral specialist, mentor, and life coach, what made you want to dive into these specific careers?

I began as a behavioral specialist while I was in school for counseling; I had no idea what a behavior specialist was I needed a job and I took off from there. I noticed with some kids who were receiving counseling they didn’t necessarily need it they could benefit from having a mentor, which lead me in that direction. I decided to start writing after I had multiple encounters with so many kids whom shared similar childhood experiences as I did, I wanted to share my world in hopes that it will motivate the hopeless to become a victor and not a victim. As it relates to becoming a life coach, the thought and inspiration came from watching an episode of a reality show. Overall, the many hats that I wear tie into my profession which is counseling.

B.A.I.T. (Believe. Affirm.Inspire.Transcend) & Go Get It! are both motivational books you’ve written geared towards young women, what’s the number 1 lesson you would want girls to take away after reading each one?

B.A.I.T is a daily motivational book, I would want them to do as the title says Believe. Affirm, Inspire. and Transcend. After reading Go Get It, i would want the ladies to put the past behind them; move forward and Go after what ever they aspire to go after.

You’ve created several nonprofit organizations and youth development programs, why is it important to you to focus on empowering our youth?

Because they will someday become adults; I just want them to succeed in life oppose to settling.

What can we expect from you in the next 5 years?

In the next 5 years you can definitely expect to see me on television, 2 peer centers one in Chicago and Atlanta, and a couple of top selling books.

Being a teen can be tough when you’re growing up, what was the most vital lesson as a teen you learned that carried into your adult life?

I would have to say, the importance of working and saving my earnings.

We’re all about EMPOWERMENT at C.O.R.E Mag, what does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment means the world to me, it is very much important to me to the extinct I would do it all for free if I had the means to do so.

Fun Faves!!- Food? Song? Artist? Celeb Crush?
My favorite foods are Tacos and seafood. Micheal Jackson is my favorite artist. (Laughs….) my celeb crush is Lance Gross.

It’s Your Fault!

If your boyfriend is horrible, it’s probably all your fault. Now that I’ve put that out there, let’s qualify what it means to be a horrible boyfriend. If he cheats on you, lies to you, disrespects you, continuously takes you for granted, or just completely fails at being anything close to the boyfriend that you actually want, he’s most likely a horrible boyfriend. So, like I said before, if you have a horrible boyfriend, I’m willing to bet that it’s all your fault. Is it your fault that he’s dishonest enough to cheat? No. Is it your fault that he doesn’t respect or appreciate you? No. Is it your fault that he’s just not even in the same ballpark as the type of person that you think of when you think of the ideal boyfriend? Of course not. Is it your fault that he’s YOUR boyfriend? YES!!!TV

In our society, it’s common practice to discuss – extensively – the shortcomings of men, especially when it comes to relationships. Sayings like “All men are dogs” are common place. It’s such a norm that when I typed “all men” in the Google search bar, some of the suggested searches were “all men cheat” and “all men are liars”. I hope that I don’t have to tell you that this isn’t true, but just in case let me be clear. IT’S NOT TRUE. There are definitely plenty of good guys in the world, but because a lot of us have had some unpleasant experiences, the good get lumped together with the bad, and women get to dodge all responsibility in picking a mate.

As young women, you’re just starting to enter the world of dating, and some of you may be considering entering a steady relationship with someone. I want to give you a little piece of reality that so many women – young and old – seem not to have. If a guy shows you exactly who he is and/or tells you exactly what he wants and those things don’t correspond to what you want and you choose to be in a relationship with him anyway, it is absolutely your fault that you are unhappy in your situation. Let’s go over a couple of examples where this rule applies.

Example #1: You want a boyfriend, someone to be committed to only you and you’re dating a guy who says that he’s not ready to settle down. Instead of accepting what he said and moving on or continuing to date him casually, you decide to try to wear him down until he commits to you. Finally, he says he’ll be your man, but you later find out he’s cheating on you. The hurt you experience will be partially your fault. True, he shouldn’t have agreed to do something he really didn’t want to do, i.e. be in a relationship, but you shouldn’t have tried to change him into what you wanted instead of just waiting until a guy who wanted the same things you do came along.

Example #2: You’re dating a guy, and he is saying all of the right things. He’s charming, funny, and down to earth. You guys have a great time when you’re together, but sometimes when you ask him a question, you get the feeling that he’s lying. You ignore the feeling and keep kicking it with him. Eventually, you catch him in a lie, but you forgive him and continue to hang out. Soon, you know that he’s constantly lying to you. Now you’re angry and feeling betrayed, but isn’t it your fault that you’re in so deep when you knew you were being played? Yep. It sure is. If your intuition says that something isn’t right, don’t ignore it, especially if it keeps happening. Tell your dude how you’re feeling, and see what happens. If his shady behavior continues, why would you keep subjecting yourself to it?

We often settle for people who aren’t good for us because we don’t want to be alone or we feel like they’re the best we can do. When they hurt us or disappoint us, we often put all of the blame on them. Of course they are responsible for their actions, but so are you. If you choose to spend your time and give your affection to someone who is mean, selfish or dishonest, how can it be that they shoulder all of the blame for your hurt feelings? You’re the one who chose to put yourself in that situation. This piece isn’t about fussing at you or chastising you. What I want you to take from this is that you are in control of your life. Take some responsibility for yourself! When things go bad, don’t just put the blame off on someone else. You make your own decisions, so when it comes to your mate, CHOOSE WISELY. It will save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

I’m The Business!

Two weekends ago I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of young ladies about the importance of establishing healthy financial behaviors as young women. Here’s the rundown of my presentation:

  • I advised the group to mimic the professional behaviors of women like Beyonce, Michelle Obama and Oprah who have all excelled in their respective careers while maintaining admirable public images.

  • We discussed the consequences of debt and emphasized the importance of saving money.

  • The most impactful advice I gave the girls was to “Ball on a Budget.”

As you all know by now, budgeting is a topic that I am super passionate about. Too often people stretch themselves thin to meet an irrelevant standard or impress people that do not matter.  It is extremely important to stay in your lane when managing your personal finances. I thought my “Ballin on a Budget” explanation was pretty thorough until I received a question at the end of my presentation. A young lady asked, “How do I ball on a budget with no job?”  It was a very good question considering all the girls participating in the workshop were younger than the legal working age. Plus, you must have income in order to budget and ball. My answer was simple, I told the girls to change their perception of what “working” means.

Most people think about working as being an employee. An employee is hired by a company to perform YEWPiccertain duties, during specified hours of the day and in return, the employee is paid a set amount of money at the end of their pay period. There is a less common approach to working referred to as entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship is when person organizes and operates a business that they started. They become their own boss and assume all responsibilities related to running their company. Instead of being hired by a company, an entrepreneur does the hiring. They are the BAWSE!! Entrepreneurs make their own work schedules and they have the potential to earn more money than an “employee” who works for someone else.  Although the potential rewards of being an entrepreneur exceed those of being a traditional employee, there are some risks to consider when pursuing an entrepreneurial career. In the early stages of your business, income (if any) can fluctuate. Entrepreneurs encounter a lot of rejection and they work long hours. It is the individual’s responsibility to determine if the risks are worth the reward. If you are a high risk, high reward type of individual, keep in mind that entrepreneurs make up the biggest segment of millionaires in the U.S., whereas entertainers account for less than 1% of all millionaires.

So back to the question, how can you ball on a budget without a job? Make a job! Ok, ok. I can hear your grumbling questions over the internet, “Well how do I make a job?” Here are 8 tips to pursuing your first entrepreneurial venture:

  1. Write down your talents.

  2. Write down your strengths.

  3. Write down your hobbies.

  4. Write down the things that other people like about you.

  5. Review your list.

  6. Circle the things on the list that people are willing to pay for.

  7. Put a box around the item that has the most potential.

  8. Develop a strategy to launch your business around the item in #7.

Once you put #8 into action, you will have become an entrepreneur. And don’t think you are too young. There are thousands of youth across the world that have already started businesses who are younger than you. Here are a few:

zoe

This is Zoe Damacela, she is the CEO of Zoe Damacela Apparel. She started her first
business at 8 years old.

thomas

This is Thomas Suarez, a 14 year old app developer and founder of CarrotCorp, a
company that designs games for mobile devices.

leanna-archer

This is Leanna Archer. She started her company, Leanna’s Inc at 9 years old.
Leanna’s Inc makes all natural hair care products.

There is an old saying,”If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.” I want our
readers to never work a day in their lives. Working for other people is so 1990. Develop your strengths
and talents early while you don’t have anything to loose. The older you get, the harder it gets to
become an entrepreneur. So get started now. You do not have to be a businesswoman, you can BE the
BUSINESS!!

…then you can really Ball on a Budget

-Courtney Hale
