Drive, determination and pure talent are just a few of the amazing qualities that Gabrielle Clover displays! Taking off with the piano at age 9, Gabrielle took her instrumental ventures to a higher level by introducing herself to other musical elements like the violin, and choir.  She even took on the xylophone and snare drum in her high school percussion ensemble with no prior experience!  With great music teachers in piano and violin, Gabby competed in the Florida State Junior Music Convention annually, taking home state titles every year in events like sight reading, fiddling, and several duet categories as well.  Aside from music performance, she took on the theoretical side of music by studying in-depth music theory as well.  Although she is currently a full time student at Fordham University in New York City majoring in Psychology, she still has a passion for performing and making music in her spare time.

Let’s get to know this remarkable young lady better…

Music is a powerful tool to express yourself, how has it impacted your life?

Music has been my ultimate release and therapy.  I love performing for others because it’s a great way to express yourself without words.  Whenever you’re having a bad day, it’s such a great release to be able to channel any stresses or frustrations by playing beautiful music.

What has been your favorite song you’ve covered? How long did it take you to learn?

My favorite song to cover is actually one I’m working on now, “Someone Like You” by Adele.  The piano instrumental meshes so nicely with the violin I may do a couple more after this one! It took me about a week to learn completely, and right now I’m in the process of recording it so I can finally get it on YouTube.

What are 3 pieces of advice you would give to girls who wanted to pursue their dreams in music but are too nervous to start?

First, I’d say embrace your true potential.  I believe in the saying “you can do anything if you put your mind to it,” and that includes music as well.

Second, you have to really want to play an instrument to accomplish your goal.  It doesn’t come easy, but is definitely possible if you truly work at it and are dedicated.

Third, go for it! Being a musician is such an accomplished feat, and is definitely possible for anyone who wants to do so.

Photobucket
If you could perform with anyone on stage who would it be and why?

I would love to perform with Alicia Keys on stage.  After seeing her perform live in concert I was absolutely amazed! She’s extremely talented and I admire her musical diversity.

We are all about empowerment at C.O.R.E mag, What does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment, to me, means embracing your true identity to the fullest and not being afraid to be yourself.  Target your inner talents and strengths, and take advantage of the beautiful woman that you are.

Where do you see your music taking you in the next 5 years?

While I am currently in school as a psychology major, music is still a significant hobby for me.  In the next 5 years, I hope to continue performing and playing beautiful music. After graduating, I would love to begin teaching and to possibly find some ensembles to perform with.  Who knows, maybe one of my covers will get noticed by a celebrity!

Fun Faves- Fave Food,? Artist? Song? Celeb Crush?

Fave food would have to be cheez-it’s. I can eat those things all day!

Artist – it would have to be a tie between Erykah Badu and Dwele

Song – that’s a tough one…I have such a wide range of favorites because I listen to so many genres!

Celeb Crush – Will Smith is definitely a charmer!

Meet World Wide Nate

“Travel the world and have the time of your life”is the motto that world traveler Nathan Fluellen lives by! Nathan has traveled to four continents covering 30 countries including Taiwan, Vatican City, Mexico, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Sweden, and England just to name a few! Inspiring and educating others about numerous cultures, Nathan continues to motivate and empower young people to conquer their dreams and live a life they have always imagined!

Let’s get to know Nathan Fluellen better….

What first motivated you to create a life based on traveling the world?

The motivation started in college while attending Tennessee State. I came to a cross roads when I started to think about what I really wanted to do with the rest of my life as I approached graduation. A large portion of my family has traveled or lived abroad. My classmates at TSU were doing amazing things and I wanted to do something amazing too. And my college professor was the tipping point when he challenged me to see more countries then him. He has been to over 80 countries at the time so my goal has become to hit the century mark and visit 100 countries. During a trip to Roatan it become more evident as I was walking on a white sand beach I dawned on me that it would be selfish for me to continue to have these amazing experiences and not share them with people.

I’m sure you have thousands of places you love but what are your top 3 places to visit and why?

South Africa, the motherland, I was blessed to spend two weeks in SA and visit Johannesburg, Kruger Park, Cape Town and Durban. Each place had its distinction and the common factor that made each location wonderful were the people. The people of South Africa have the warmest spirit; the people always make a country memorable.

Rio de Janeiro the energy of the city is non-stop. The food, music and beaches are electric. Rio feels like visiting an alternate universe to the States because the history, music and culture all developed from the new world exploration. The city is a gorgeous with its mix of tropical weather, city life and beaches. All the people are gorgeous and welcoming too.

Roatan, Honduras is an island off the coast of Honduras and it is perfectly underdeveloped. Divers mostly visit here but it has the perfect balance of luxury and old world charge. The second largest great barrier reef runs along the island that makes for warm, calm water and the best snorkeling and scuba diving in North America.

Sometimes young people are nervous or worried about traveling outside of the country, why is it important to travel the world? What does it teach you?

My college professor quoted the rapper, The Rza in his book when he said “a wise man is a traveling man”. That statement holds true because the world is a diverse place, not everyone does things like we do in the States. When you visit another country and see an entire nation do things different your perspective changes, you see new possibilities and appreciate different approaches to life. Traveling is instinctive because anything can go wrong and you can be miles away from home but you learn how to be responsible, courteous to others, your own accountant, and utilize networking skills. `

When creating your amazing life of jet-setting, what was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome?

The biggest obstacle was balancing earning a living and traveling. Once I figured out how to generate cash flow to fund my traveling then the ball started to roll a lot easier.

You’re always on the go visiting incredible places around the world, what are 3 pieces of advice would you give to teens who want to travel the world?

1. Network before you travel by using websites like courchsurfing.com to meet people locally. A local contact can make a world of difference.
2. Contact tourism boards, their job is to provide you with all the information you need to have a wonderful trip so you can come back home and spread the word about what a great time you had and other people will come visit.
3. Travel with your ears and not your mouth. Traveling is great but with the good comes the bad and there are people who target tourists. Being the loud America in an unfamiliar environment can lead to bad results. Be wise as a serpent and humble as a dove is what my mother always says.

C.O.R.E is all about empowerment, What does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment is educating yourself. Take every opportunity to learn as much as you can and you will do yourself the ultimate justice. Knowledge is definitely power.

Fun Faves- Food? Song? Artist? Quote?

Fela Kuti, Kanye West, Little Dragon, Lykke Li, Common, Mos Def, Grizzly Bear

LaQuatre Rhodes
How long have you been dancing?

LR:I have been dancing pretty much my entire life. I started when I was 5 years old.

MS:I first started dancing at the age of 10. I begged my mom to allow me to attend an after school program that offered ballet classes. There I met life long friends and discovered many of my unleashed and hidden talents. It came natural. From that age and on, I was always involved in dance classes- before school, in a performing arts school, and after school dance programs.

What first inspired you to express yourself through dance?

LR:I’m not really sure what first inspired me, it was as if I woke up one day and said “mommy I want to be a ballerina.” Since my mom was so supportive of any and every interest I expressed she signed me up immediately, and I’ve been in love with dance ever since. I guess it was just the gracefulness, poise, beauty, and giving emotions seen with every movement that made me fall in love with dancing.
MS:It was seeing a group of girls performing a tap routine on a sidewalk. It was three young girls dressed in shiny costumes tapping their hearts out. They appeared to be SO EXCITED to just perform and showcase all they had learn months prior in their dance class. It was then I knew I had to start class. It wanted to perform.

What are 3 life skills that you’ve learned through dance?
LR: Through dance I have learned discipline, endurance, and passion which are all essential qualities to being successful.
MS: Delayed gratification, creativity, and teamwork. I say delayed gratification because you have to keep reminding yourself to stay discipline to get to that end goal. That end goal could be a dance recital, college, or a doctorate. Dance teaches this skill. Secondly, Dance and creativity at times can be synonymous. Discovering new dance moves, incorporating ballet positions to fit that particular part of a song, or even sewing your own dance costumes all call for creativity. And thirdly, of course, it is teamwork. My opinion is that the best dance performances are not solos. Its a group effort that allows me to see the beauty of dancing.
Why is it important for young girls to tap into performing arts at a young age?

LR:Being involved with performing arts at a young age allows the development of expressiveness, creativity, and freedom to get caught up in the emotions of the heart which may not be feasible in other settings. It is the liberty of the performance arts that allows expression without limits and an avenue to channel any emotion or thoughts positively.

MS: Many young girls today are longing to be apart of something. It is important that whatever they get involved in is POSITIVE and meaningful. If children get involved in the performing arts at a young age it will truly bless the rest of their lives. I believe self- worth, self- discipline, and self-esteem can be cultivated through dance, drama, music, and visionary arts.

How has dance empowered you?

LR:Dance empowered me to be myself and to be confident in my abilities which inspired me to be focused, passionate, and steadfast in going after my life aspirations regardless of any obstacles along the way.
MS:I feel dance has equipped me with many life skills- creativity, discipline, tenacity, social, and communicative skills. Not to mention, dance has allowed me to have developed life long friendships with fellow dancers. Overall, dance has equipped me to open future doors that, before dance, I would have allowed to remain shut. Dance created a opportunity for me to reach empowerment.

Actress, spoken word artist, singer, writer and graphic designer, Lisa Beasely is on the journey of using every ounce of talent in her bones. Hailing from Gary, IN, she moved to Memphis, TN where she studied Classical Jazz Studies at LeMoyne-Owen College earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. During her college career she  began to sing live and perform throughout the city gaining recognition as a spoken word. After graduating, she relocated to Hollywood, CA and attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy and trained with the top entertainment industry’s professionals. Lisa now performs in Chicago, IL in several stage play productions and continues to thrive as a performing artist. Her dedication on stage led her to a nomination with the Black Theatre Alliance Awards. Lisa Beasley is also an entrepreneur  with her own Graphic Design company, Lifted Soul . She  is a freelance writer for several including Persuade Magazine and CB Publishing.

Time to meet Lisa B!

You are a young lady who rocks many hats! Being a singer, actress, writer, graphic designer and spoken word artist, what made you pursue all of your talents?

Everything I do now survived the “Let’s See If She Quits” test. When I was younger, my mother allowed me to take up and quit as many extracurricular activities as I wanted. Trying this different approach proved to her the things I really cared about. I used to want to be a ballerina, a track and field star, a swimmer, a gymnast, sociologist, and a myriad of other things that don’t interest me anymore. (Although with acting, I can pretend to be all those things!)

I have never quit performing, which led to my singing and acting career, and I never gave up my love for paper, which led to a career in graphic design. I always believed that you should live to work and not work to live. I wanted to be able to establish a career out of things I genuinely loved to do.

Poetry is a powerful way to get your emotions across while also relaying a message to the audience, how did poetry become an outlet for you?

When I was a sophomore at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, TN, I joined a group called the Poetry Society. That was when I was introduced to poetry as a spoken word art form. I have always written poems but I had never recited a poem in front of a group of people. My first poetry reading was NERVE-WRECKING. I was scared. S-C-A-R-E-D! I didn’t bother memorizing the piece and I stood with both of my hands clutching the piece of paper that I’m sure was rustling because I was shaking. I was presenting a very personal piece and that was the first time I felt vulnerable and naked in front of a crowd. Yet, when I began talking, I was at ease. It’s easier for me to share personal information through poetry as opposed to talking about it in everyday conversation.

After encouragement from a fellow poet, Jada, I participated in my first poetry slam a few months later. During that moment, at 19, I experienced freedom sharing ideas that I wrote in solitude. People were listening to what I had to say. Ever since, I realized that poetry is an amazing platform to call attention to important issues or to speak on the behalf of the voiceless. Poetry is my way to tell someone how I feel without the awkward silence. Poetry is my way of telling someone off without getting into an argument. Poetry is my way of venting, loving, sympathizing, being funny, entertaining and educating.

You own the fantastic graphic design company, Lifted Soul Inc., what made you want to start your own business?

I wanted to eat. Lol. No, but really, when I graduated from undergrad, I had two choices: Begin working in the corporate world of Enterprise Rent-A-Car or attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Hollywood, CA. I choose the latter.

I have a B.A. in Music and I knew that I wanted to pursue a professional career in the arts every since high school. After I graduated from college, I felt pressure to begin a career that I could make a lot of money in however, my desire to further train in the arts exceeded the traditional path others thought I would take. I wanted to pursue my passion. I wanted to do what I loved to do.

However, passion doesn’t pay the light bills. Love won’t put groceries in my refrigerator. I’ve always loved designing images on my computer and when I moved to Hollywood in 2009 I decided to turn that love into a business. I used some money that I should have used for tuition and invested in an MacBook and Photoshop and got to work!

Sometimes it’s easy to get discouraged when pursuing your dreams, how do you stay positive to continue to conquer your goals?

It does get discouraging and sometimes LIFE has a way of distracting me from my overall objectives. My foundation and faith in God helps me to stay relaxed, positive, and confident that if I stay on the right track everything I plan to do will prosper. I talk positively to myself out loud everyday and I also have a “Faith Book.” It’s a small book that I carry with me everywhere I go that has a bunch of pictures and phrases that reminds me of all the dreams and goals I hope to reach.

I also stay positive by hanging around positive people. NO NEGATIVITY ALLOWED. That stuff is contagious.

You were nominated in the Black Theatre Alliance Awards, how has acting impacted your life?

Stepping into the world of another person that isn’t real and pretending to be somebody else is sooooo much fun! It allows me to explore other life situations that I may never experience. It stretches me to think outside of the box and think, “How would the character respond?”

Acting has also impacted my life by teaching me discipline, strengthening my work ethic, and it encourages me to stay physically fit and mentally sharp. Right now, I’m working mainly on stage. That requires a lot of rehearsals and a lot of energy. I have to make sure I am focused and alert.

I have been acting professional in Chicago for almost a year now and the relationships that I’ve built are irreplaceable and I am definitely enjoying working with some of the most talented people in the industry.

What are 2 pieces of advice you would give to girls who wanted to pursue their dreams but are nervous?

You are the only YOU created. There will never be another you. EVER. Nobody can do what YOU can do. Are there a million doctors? Yes. Are there a billion writers? Yes. A there a trillion singers? Yes. But nobody can do what YOU can do like YOU can do it! Be confident in your abilities and what you have to offer. You may not only be the missing piece to solve a puzzle, but you may also be the first piece to a puzzle the world never thought to solve.
Consider everything a learning experience. Learn from setbacks. Learn from heartbreaks. Learn from past failures and move on!

We are all about empowerment at C.O.R.E, what does empowerment mean to you?

Empowerment is a women’s secret weapon. Empowerment is inspiration for others to keep going. Empowerment is the “get out of bed to change the world” kind of attitude that makes people motivated to keep going. Empowerment is giving yourself permission to be amazing and not apologizing for it!

Fun Faves- Fave Food,? Artist? Song? Celeb Crush?

Don’t judge me. 🙂

Fave Food: Macaroni and Cheese in any form. Homemade, from a box, microwaveable snack packets, or any other form I haven’t discovered that I’m sure will be amazing. Macaroni and Cheese with a ice cold Pepsi on the side.

Fave Song: It’s a tie between A Song For You by Donnie Hathoway and Here Without You by 3 Doors Down.

Celeb Crush: This answers changes every two minutes. Today I’m in love with Jesse Williams from Grey’s Anatomy. Yesterday, it was Mehcad Brooks.

Being driven, determined and focused is how Ariana Pierce  has navigated her way through life. This young  author, businesswoman, actress, full time college student and inspirational speaker has not allowed her age to define how much she can accomplish! Already perfecting the art of mastering success in different avenues, she not only launched her own Nail Polish line by 17 but also has been author to six different books as well. She hosts a National Teen Conference every year to inspire others and by  the age of 7  had already entered the acting world! Her couture polish line, Superstar Nail Lacquer, quickly gained recognition and is now established as an industry favorite among today’s hottest stars such as Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Lauren Conrad and many more have rocked the fresh colors.

Time to meet Ariana Pierce…

You are quite a mover & shaker! You have written six books, run two businesses, attend college full-time and hosts an annual teen success conference, how do you juggle such an active lifestyle?
I plan everything! I can’t live without my calendar/agenda. School is my priority at the moment, so I make   sure that I take care of my homework during the week so I can do my business and travel on the weekends. I do have to sacrifice time with friends and family sometimes, but that’s what comes with owning a business and being in college.

Its important that we learn from our peers, what motivated you to hosts your  National Annual Teen Conferences?
I have a passion to help other young individuals become entrepreneurs and start living their dreams now and  not later. I knew that I had something to share with these individuals, so I wanted to create a fun environment where they could be inspired to succeed. From the conference, I was inspired to create a coaching product called 30 Days To Making It. With this product, I give you 30 steps to making it in any career path you want to succeed in. It can be found on my site at arianapierce.com.

Your nail polish line, Superstar Nail Lacquer simply rocks! Major celebs as Miley Cyrus, Lauren Conrad, and Selena Gomez have all wore your flavorful color line! Have you always been a beauty junkie? What made you choose nail polish out of all the other beauty products?
The older I got, the more I became a beauty junkie. I was inspired to create my nail polish line from the runways. The concept behind Superstar Nail Lacquer is couture for your hands. I wanted to create a line that was for the fashionable woman on the go!

Just at the tender age of 7 you were bitten by the acting bug and have gone on to star in movies as Blessed and Cursed, what drew you to the world of acting?
My parents always say that I was a “dramatic kid”. Not in a bad way, but I always expressed myself in a fun and entertaining way. Acting is another way for me to express myself.

Being a young entrepreneur comes with many highs and also some lows, how do you overcome difficulties in your life?
I always depend on God to help me in every situation. Also, I’m thankful to have supportive parents that push me to keep going. Even in difficult times, my family gives me wisdom on how to overcome the situation.

Even though you already achieved more than what most complete in a lifetime, What is your ultimate goal in life?
One of my goals in life is to own a sports team. That has always been a desire of mine.

You already are tons of girls role model, who has been your biggest role model in your life and how?
My mom is the biggest role model in my life. She not only inspires me to be successful, but to think big. She always says that there is always something new to accomplish. She pushes me to fulfill my dreams.

CORE Mag is all about empowering girls, what does empowerment mean to you?
Empowerment means being informed and going after your dreams now and not later. You are never too young to get started.

Fun Faves!- Food? Song? Artist? Celeb crush?
My fav food is a vietnamese dish called Pho. My fav artist is Justin Bieber.. OMG I think I’m his biggest fan.
My celeb crush would have to be Cam Newton! He’s so hot!
