Feeling My Flo!

Menstruation! Yes, we said it! And as awkward as it might seem, it doesn’t have to be. It’s time to gather a new perspective with the Feeling My Flo podcast.

The Feeling My Flo podcast, which launched on July 11, 2019, is a conversation shaped around this transformational experience that happens to those along the gender spectrum. Feeling My Flo discusses a broad range of topics from puberty to fighting period poverty.

The host of the podcast, Kamilah Kashanie, is a twenty-three year old Brooklyn College graduate. She along with executive producer Mia Warren and Executive Editor Juleyka Lantigua-Williams, aim to build a community centered on a common but impactful experience.

“This generation is intellectually curious, so each of our 10-12 minute episodes will be fun, engaging, intimate, and probing.”

Podcasts are becoming an impactful influence among young people. What inspired you to start Feeling My Flo about menstruation?

Feeling My Flo (FMF) is actually the brainchild of our producer, Mia Warren, and our editor, Juleyka Lantigua-Williams. They invited me to be the host. As the three of us got to talking, I really resonated with a lot of the feelings they had about why FMF is an important podcast to put out into the world. As storytellers, I think we’re all really interested in digging into issues that other people might be afraid to tackle. Menstruation is such a sticky subject in some circles. It’s still not considered necessarily “appropriate” to talk about this completely normal bodily function that’s been happening to people since the beginning of time. At Feeling My Flo, we want to change that. Young menstruators deserve a place where their bodies are understood. We want to reaffirm to them that there’s nothing wrong with them, especially during puberty, which can already be such a vulnerable time.

Can you give us an idea of what specific topics regarding menstruation will be covered on the podcast?

In our first season, we talk about what it’s like to be a “late bloomer” – waiting to get your period after all of your friends have theirs. We explore how menstruation has affected one family across three generations of women, what sympathy cramps are like, how a family with two gay dads talk to their daughters about their periods, what menstruating is like for a trans and non-binary person, and how a lack of access to period products can impact people experiencing homelessness. Menstruation looks and feels different for everyone, and we want to talk about all of it. And this is just the beginning of the conversation. As we start thinking about season two, there’s so much more that we want to cover.

Young women have different experiences when it comes to having their first period. Do you remember yours and who was there to guide you?

Oh yes. I definitely remember my first period, and I talk about it in the pilot episode. I grew up in a house full of people with periods, so there were always products around and I had a little bit of prior knowledge just from osmosis. I started my period when I was 10, when I was out to dinner with my mom and some family. My older sister had actually started her period a month or two before me, so when it started and I felt that clammy sensation in my pants, I already knew what was happening. Growing up with three women in my house, and a plethora of older relatives and cousins around, I had a lot of people around me who had been through it before and gave me tips, whether I wanted them to or not.

What do you want young girls to walk away with after listening to the podcast?

We want everyone who listens to Feeling My Flo to walk away with more understanding of what menstruation is like for those who experience it. And the show isn’t just for menstruators. My boyfriend doesn’t menstruate, but talking about it with him has been really important to us understanding each other better, especially during my period. Menstruation affects everyone, whether they bleed or not, and really understanding that is a part of breaking down the stigma that’s attached to periods. And we want to do that in a way that’s fun and engaging and makes you want to hear and learn more. Ultimately, we want our audience to feel informed, entertained, and empowered after every episode.

Do you have advice for young people who are afraid to ask questions about their period or are embarrassed?

I know it may feel weird at first, and it feels like this mysterious, super private thing that you don’t want to talk about, but it’s completely okay. Find someone that you trust and ask away. Find someone who knows what you’re going through. There’s a lot about periods and the human body that we’re still figuring out, so there’s no such thing as a stupid question and nothing is too crazy to ask. Some of the resources we recommend for young menstruators include Hello Clue, Scarleteen, and Planned Parenthood.

You say that period poverty is a topic of conversation. Is there something young people can be doing to fight period poverty in other countries?

Period poverty exists in our backyards. There are many organizations working to fight period poverty that young people can get involved with. In one of our episodes, we talked to a national activist and some high schoolers about how they’ve taken action. PERIOD is an example of an organization that’s fighting period poverty. They have people stationed all over the country donating products and doing research on how to make menstruation a safe and affordable reality for everyone.

We are all about empowerment, what does EMPOWERMENT mean to you?

For me, empowerment means feeling like you can do anything. When you’re feeling empowered, it’s like nothing can stop you. If you want to do something, or change something, you just can. All the barriers – racism, sexism, inequality – they just don’t mean as much when you know you have the capacity to do more than all those “isms” tell you you can.

Chloe + Halle:Goals

The singing duo Chole and Halle have taken the entertainment industry by storm. The two sisters (ages 18 and 20) have a total of four albums together so far featuring songs that are acknowledged by many people, such as Filmmaker Ava Duvernay in her hit adaptation of “A Wrinkle In Time”. It is unquestionable that they have accomplished so much during the past few years. Here are a few reasons why they are both of our Music Goals!

(Giphy.com)

1. Their music is written and produced for them, by them. The duo was nominated for two Grammy’s this year for their debut album “the kids are alright”. An album that the two wrote together in their living room and self produced. Talk about independence!

2. They’ve gained fans such as Beyoncé, the woman who is to thank for signing them to her label, and Michelle Obama! Having support from former first lady Michelle Obama is anyone’s goal.

3. The two started off uploading themselves singing covers of songs on YouTube. Their talent and perseverance hustled a path for them to become adored and respected musicians and performers in front of crowds by the millions. Exhibiting leadership and empowering many young women of color to chase their dreams.

Scroll through the style diary of teen blogger, Taylor Cassidy!

What’s your name, age + city you’re from?
My name is Taylor Cassidy, I’m sixteen, and I live in St Louis!

Style is showing who you are without having to speak! Name your top 3 trends you’re feeling this season?
You’re completely right. I express and communicate through my fashion all the time.  If you see me walking down the street, you’ll know my mood by my clothes. Because fashion design is my dream once I get older, the world of fashion is in every corner of my life. Funky earrings are my thing. My friends can catch me styled with watermelon ones, some that look like faces, or even a pair that resemble Oreos. In conjunction with earrings, one can never go wrong with the simple T-shirt and skinny jeans trend. Just roll up the hem twice, tuck the shirt in (don’t forget your earrings!)and your good to go! This season I’ve really been into a good pair of sandal heels. With summer approaching, adding a pair of short- heeled sandals can make any outfit exude a bold femininity.

If you had 30 seconds to grab your 3 favorite style pieces, what would they be?
This is a hard question. I know that if I were to plan a trip where I need to pack very light, I would never forget my St. John’s Bay rain jacket that I found at the thrift store. It was a man’s extra large, but it just looked way too good on me to pass up. In addition, you will rarely see me without my Tommy Hilfiger Slip ons. They are easy to take on and off and they look like trendy tennis shoes while still having a unique touch. For me, it’s all in the details, so the last thing I would grab would be a couple of rings. If you were wearing a simple long sleeve, jeans, and a pair of those heeled sandals, adding a subtle bling will make it so memorable. There are usually super affordable ones at Forever 21.

Style inspo is everything! Who’s your ultimate fashion icon + why?
Well, first off, personal style to me is taking inspiration from each and every person, art-piece, or feeling that you may experience. However, if I had to pick one (which is so hard!) I would choose between Yara Shahidi and the character Whitley Gilbert from A Different World. Yara serves me a contemporary street style with a side of elegance with each look. She’s a great role model for young black women as well, which makes her outfits ten times better! Whitley was one of the first black women I saw on Tv when I was younger and said to myself, “I want that outfit!” Now, as a sixteen year old, I can appreciate the nostalgia and make it modern, leaving out Whitley’s (although we love her!) not-so-humble attitude!

Getting ready in the morning can be fun  but stressful  if you’re in a time crunch, what’s your go-to look if you’re in a rush?
I know this is extra, but I always pick my outfits the night before. It gives me a clearer head, I can have more fun, and it takes off one less thing to do in the morning. However, if I woke up an hour late and I have a test first period, I’d slap on a pair of Adidas sweatpants with the bottoms rolled up, tuck in a graphic tee and throw on a jacket or cardigan, wear white sneakers, and make sure to pick my favorite pair of earrings (it’s the watermelon ones by the way).
What’s your number 1 rule when it comes to style?
Listen, if you have the plainest outfit in the whole room, if you’re wearing a new garment and you’re not sure how people will react, just know that you exude an energy. How you carry yourself is an addition to your outfit. Your facial expression is an accessory. People will know that you love your outfit by the way you wear it, so my tip is to know who you are before you get dressed. It’s easy to dress like someone your not, but when you express yourself fully, that’s when you’ll feel best. Try new things and be open to change, but first have a foundation in your mind and accessorize from there.

Surviving PMS x BLUME!

Although having your period can be a hallelujah moment for some, it can be a nuisance for others. There are so many symptoms that accompany your period and PMS. Between cramps, mood swings, and breakouts, it’s a time of the month no one looks forward to. On the bright side, we recently tried some amazing products from BLUME, a company that makes “safe, sustainable period products for your life”. They offer monthly customizable boxes to be delivered to your house with all the essentials including face wash, PMS oil, blemish treatment, and organic tampons and pads. Keep reading to find out what we loved about BLUME!

Meltdown (blemish treatment)
This all-natural treatment is perfect for when you get a breakout or when you feel a pimple coming on. I used it at night right after using the face wash and it felt so good on my skin. Plus, since you only need a drop or two for each use, the bottle will last you a
while.

Daydreamer (face wash)
I’ve used other face washes in the past, but this one felt different. It was light and felt so good on my face, especially when it massaged it in. After rinsing, it didn’t leave my face feeling dry or anything. This product is a keeper.

Cloud 9 (PMS oil)
First and foremost, I love this oil for the smell. The rollerball style application makes it feel like I’m putting on a light perfume. Not only, does it smell divine, it also helps with PMS symptoms including cramps. A few circular motions on the chest, wrists, and abs will do the trick.

Throw The Whole GPA Away!

(Giphy.com)

Not every semester is going to be amazing. Even Lebron has a bad game every once in a while. This is only to say that if you focus and re-strategize, your come back can be spectacular. A bad semester doesn’t have to ruin your whole career. It should be a learning experience instead. Here are three techniques for rebounding from a bad semester.

“Dis tew much” | Taking on more classes than the average student doesn’t equate to better grades or a better outcome for the semester. It can actually be detrimental to your GPA if you bite off more than you can chew.

Quality vs. Quantity | Make sure you take the time use good studying techniques. The amount of hours you take to study matters less than the quality of your study session.

Teacher’s Pet | Being teacher’s pet could make or break your semester. Be there during their office hours. Sit in the front row. Always do the extra credit. By doing these things, you will show the professor that you’re putting in the effort to do well.

New Semester, Old You?

A new semester is upon us! Our schedules just got busier and our workload is a little heavier. Just the thought of this would make any normal person a bit uneasy. However, there are ways to get ahead of the game so that you’re fully prepared for the semester and anxiety won’t creep up on you like those forgotten assignments!

Pull up with a planner|

Planners are extremely helpful especially when you have a schedule full of club meetings, due dates, and get-togethers. It will allow you to write things down and have a visual representation of what your schedule looks like so you’ll know when you can squeeze in a nap!

Get a head start|
I know this is easier said than done, but anything you do to get a head start on an assignment will help you tremendously. You’ll have more time to plan and ask questions if needed. You’ll even have room for those days when you’re procrastinating.

Sleep, sleep + sleep|
This is a fan favorite. Sleeping is not only a hobby for those who stay busy; it is also an essential part of your health. Getting a minimum of 7-8 hours of sleep a night will improve your mood and give you the energy you need to kill it!

Squad: Do Not Disturb

Making moves with the squad always calls for fun! But have you ever been craving alone time when your friends are begging you to come hang? Well, here are 4 ways to successfully have alone time when you need it. Also remember, time to yourself has a positive impact on your mental health and should be nothing to feel guilty about.

Set Alone Time| Set aside a specific time of the day that you want to be meant for you and only you. By the way, this time shouldn’t consist of bedtime hours. It should be a time of day that you can have to yourself consistently so that your peers will understand and respect that as your time

Set an alone place| Find a place where you can go and embrace yourself. This place can be near or far but just make sure it is easily accessible.

Start a hobby| It sounds cliché, but hobbies are perfect opportunities to focus on something other than what’s going on in your busy life. It may take time to figure out what the perfect hobby is for you, but when you do, you’ll learn so much about yourself.

Put your phone on do not disturb| The ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature on your phone is a blessing. You can turn it on during your alone time to make sure you’re not distracted when the squad is calling you. Just don’t forget to turn it off when alone time is over.

Tired AF? Push Through This Semester!

(Giphy.com)

The end of the semester is near and even though everything seems like it’s happening at once, just take a chill pill. You’ll be okay! Papers, projects, and finals are right around the corner and it’s nothing you can’t handle. We are here to help you manage these next few weeks so you can walk away from this semester with a peace of mind.

Sashay Your Way To Class. This rule may seem so simple but is very important especially during the last few weeks of the semester. Professors will be teaching last minute PowerPoint’s and going over info from earlier in the semester. This is your last chance to ask questions so make sure you’re present.

Break Don’t Quit. In between studying, classes, and trying to stay focused, make sure you take a break. Go hangout with friends, grab a quick bite to eat off campus, or have a short workout session in the gym. Anything is a break as long as you’re focused on something else.

Prioritize your priorities. You have a million and one things to do but some things are more important than others. There are assignments that you may have procrastinated on for a while that you need to start before you begin that take home test. Just make sure you put everything in order of importance so that you’ll have a grasp on all of your assignments.

Holiday #ClapBack Season!

The holidays are right around the corner, which means along with delicious home cooked meals will come lots of inquisitive relatives wanting to know all about your personal life. There are very little ways to avoid it but we are here to help you survive it. Relatives know how to push your buttons but with these tips, your holiday season can be somewhat peaceful and your business can remain private.

Give Only A Little. When the family asks about what’s going on in your life, they’re going to expect a long summation of what you’ve been up to since the last holiday season. Throw them off with simple and vague answers.

Stay Away. Your aunties and uncles usually ask the hard-hitting questions around the dinner table. Therefore, once you’ve made your plate of food make a run for it to another part of the house or take a seat at the kid’s table. They’ll be sure to keep you entertained.

Be Petty.  The last resort is a bold one. If you’re feeling exceptionally petty, you can hit your relative back with a #thanksgivingclapback. We warn you to only try this with your cool aunt, your older cousin, or anyone that knows how to take a joke.
