Hey Fly Girls!

So you end your last period class and go to closest vending machine before you jump on the bus and head home, right? Well, after you take a quick read over this, you may want to do a double take on what you’re snacking on.

According to a recent study, African American  youth are almost twice as likely as their peers to consume unhealthy high calorie, sugary drinks like Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

From Think Progress:

“Some groups may be more at risk for soda, others may be more at risk for fruit drinks, all of which … have the same sugar base that contributes to obesity and disease,” one of the study’s co-authors, health policy researcher Lisa Powell, explained.

This particular study didn’t try to figure out why that’s the case, although Powell did suggest to Reuters that “cultural norms” and cost could both be factors. But other studies have examined the links between race, class, and nutrition — and research has confirmed that access to healthy food is divided along racial and socioeconomic lines.  The fast food industry also contributes to nutrition disparities by targeting its marketing to low-income communities.

Internet Sensation

Guns click-clacking, all day trapping, money stacking, so-called rapping
Gum popping, booty dropping, man hating, always debating
A million kids… she must stay ovulating!
The hood star. The ghetto queen.
Who come from a place where the streets are mean.
They’re everywhere to be seen,
Shown on every single screen.

Described in CDs
Coming soon to a theater near you. They can be seen in 3-D.
Every night on every channel; they call it “reality” TV.
Sure, for some, it really is their life
Not poking fun at their plight
Just emphasizing a point that I wish others might.
I’m aware that to some we all look alike.
But unlike what we constantly see on TV and computer screens
We are not all living one big dysfunctional life.

What I’m asking you to do is to make the choice of how you define you.
Are you going to model yourself after the latest World Star sensation?
How about the hip hop star whose song is on every station,
Often spewing pure idiocy over the radio waves of the nation?
Gold all in your watch or gold all in your grill…
Is that the definition of you that’s real?
How ‘bout Fendi, Gucci, Louis, Prada?
Will brands become your identity like cattle headed for slaughter?

These are the days in which you figure out the ways
To determine how to set the stage to move your life into a phase
Where people can look at you and be amazed!!!
Not by your stupidity, but by your brilliance.
I’m asking you to develop strong character and integrity that’s resilient.
Because there will be times when you’re tested.
But do the work so as not to be bested
By those who saw more in themselves than you see within you.

To make a long story short, don’t model your life
After those who will obviously do anything for views and likes.
Require more of yourself than learning the tools of fools whose only vocation…
Is trying to become the next internet sensation.

Good morning Fly Girls!

Ok, so one of the cool things about being a teen today is that more and more people are becoming open minded to differences. Whether cultural background, gender or even sexuality, teens are opening up about who they truly are as a person!

Check out a piece from Advocate.com by  high school student  C. Jacobs who explains the importance of  Gay-Straight alliances in schools:

GSAs help students become more comfortable with talking about and expressing who they are, especially when it comes to expressing their sexuality or gender.

Even though we’re called the Gay-Straight Alliance, anyone can join, and our events are for the entire community to enjoy. The GSA helps to bring our school community toger-UTAH-GSA-CLUBS-ON-RISE-large570ther. We host talent and fashion shows and dances and balls to invite students, teachers, and administrators to relax, interact with each other, have fun, be productive, and avoid getting in trouble during our out-of-school time.

One of the most important parts of any community is acceptance, and that’s what the GSA is all about. Our events show that whether you’re gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning, there is a space in our school where you can be yourself.

That’s why I joined the Burke’s GSA, to help my peers understand that they can express who they are and what they feel while at school, and that it will be accepted and respected. I hope my participation in the GSA will help me gain friends, knowledge, and responsibility and help students and teachers at the Burke know that there is a place at our school where we explore, appreciate and celebrate differences.
