Rapping, singing, modeling and acting with equal passion, Mik is introspective and energetic, fusing a unique appeal of focus and emotion. Born and raised in Philadelphia, her career in entertainment began as a child, modeling and acting. Upon moving to Southern California, Mik quickly booked several commercials and landed a recurring role on NYPD Blue.

Since receiving a BA in Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley, Mik has achieved commercial and print success in campaigns for Sony, AT&T, 24 Hour Fitness and ProActiv, in addition to a multitude of roles for Film & TV. She most recently shot a national commercial for Bank of America.

Musically, Mik delivers sassy-chic, rapping in a melodic bravado over hard hitting pop beats. She is a true lyricist, relying on character and intellect, presenting a rare example of the female MC. Mik is currently working with Genius Music promoting the single “Let’s Werk” from her forthcoming solo album. From albums to videos, movies and more, there is plenty to look forward to from this multi-talented entertainer who knows no limits.

Let’s get to know Mik Brown a little better...

MikBrown

Rapping, singing, modeling and acting are just a few of your amazing  talents, what pulled you towards these fields?

You know, I remember looking at the TV one day when I was around 4 yrs old and thinking, “I want to do that!” Who knows where that comes from at that age but I told my mom who immediately began taking me to open calls and agents.  My sister and I used to create dances to popular songs in our living room.  I remember feeling disappointed because I wanted to be a live performer but I didn’t think singing was my talent.  Through my families many moves and fights, I found solace in writing; letters, journal entries and poems.  When, Eve and Lauryn Hill came on the scene I decided rap was something I could do too and I’ve been writing rhymes ever since.  Being on stage performing, whether acting or rapping is an amazing experience and I love the idea that art can make such intimate connections on a broad scale.
You’re such a dope lyricist, what is the biggest challenge being a female in a  male dominated industry?
Thank you!  The biggest challenge is the ever present misogyny which creates specific expectations regarding behavior and content. When those expectations aren’t met, things can and have turned ugly.  Most men like to dictate and I have my own path and opinions which I’m not afraid to share or pursue. I’ve faced quite a bit of doubt, discouragement and manipulation based on the direction I’ve chosen, but an alternative to the current stereotypes pervading our culture must prevail!
Your single “Let’s Werk” is a fresh high energy song, what influences your musical taste and song writing?
Thank you! Music has so much influence over our thoughts and emotions and I like to think and feel good! I hope to always make music that inspires and motivates, however that applies for the individual listener.  Lyrically it’s all about finding a creative way to share my insight and experience.

We tend to pull characteristics from others in our lives or from people we admire, who inspires you and why?

I grew up with ambitious parents who consistently stressed the importance of education and achievement.  My mother, a very proud and strong woman, has provided an excellent example of hard work and determination. She always told me I could do or be anything I choose and I’ve always believed her!

What are 3 pieces of advice you would give to girls who want to pursue their dreams in music but are too nervous to start?
For anyone nervous about pursuing any dream I say:
First – Stop being nervous! Take that same energy and get excited about the possibilities that exist for your life.
Second – Do what you love NOW. The only way to create the life that matches your desires is to live in the moment and do everything you can from where you are with what you have.
Third – DON’T STOP.  I don’t care if it kills you… what are you living for? There will be days when you want to quit, when you think no one cares and you’re no good and it’s too hard – this is normal.  The Champion perseveres.
What can we expect from you in the near future?
More music and more visuals!! I’m currently in preproduction for my next video and I am so excited to finish and release my current project which is a mix of international dance music and hip-hop.
We are all about EMPOWERMENT at C.O.R.E mag, What does empowerment mean to you?
Empowerment means having the strength to live YOUR truth and encouraging others to live theirs.
Fun Faves! Fave Food? Artist? Song? Celeb Crush?
I love plantains and seafood – ethnic food of any kind, really.  Right now I’m hugely motivated by Macklemore’s music and success as an independent artist. I really appreciate J.Cole  – the remix to “Let Nas Down” gave me chills and I even teared up a little!  Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail” is immaculate.  As for celeb crushes….I plead the 5th!!!

Gossip Girl

It’s Hot! Juicy! Ooooh you can even smell it a mile away. Hmmm let’s just call it a 6th sense. Yes! When the gossip is in the air you can pick it out a full line up! As much as you try to hold it in it just spills out of your mouth and splatters on the closest ear that ‘s in listening reach. Every conversation even if you start off by talking about something productive it always ends up with the weekly “he say, she say” tidbits of the week. Your homegirl told you something in private and instead of keeping it to yourself you just tell yourself I’m only going to tell your one other good friend and that’s it! You can insert a side eye look right about now because we knows what happens next…yes just a messy game of high school telephone where the message somehow gets chopped and screwed.

Even though you might tell yourself just being the carrier of “factual” information is harmless it often does more good then harm…

Watch What You Say– Yes people love you! They simply can’t get enough off your bubbly personality, your trendy clothing and even though you hate to admit it the fact that you are the school’s verbal social blogger. You always seem to have the newest gossip before anybody knows. Now, as you might think that waef492f2-644a-43d8-b779-d38696d3e20dhat you are spitting out can be backed up by the Encyclopedia in all actuality, you may be the cause of the problem. As much as this may be hard to swallow people who continually spread information about other people’s lives often do not have a life of their own and are not focusing on themselves enough. True statement.

Like Wildfire-In most cases people who want personal information to spread, they will ultimately share it with other people themselves. The fact that someone came to you in private and shared information with you means that they trust you. Trust is a hard trait to gain, so don’t take it so lightly. If they ask for you not to spread it, you should respect them and your friendship enough to not continue to pass on rumors.

Goes Around, Comes Around– “What goes around, comes around,” right? Right! Not trying to simply scare you but you must understand that life is a cycle. Which means whatever you put out in the world is what you will get back in your own life. So to break it down, if your are the rumor queen of your clique or school, do you not think that soon enough there is going to be a rumor spread about you pretty soon?? As basic as it might seem it’s important to treat others how you want to be treated. You would hate for the school to think you made out or even slept with a your guy friend, especially if it’s not true right??

Just always think twice before you deem yourself a “Gossip Girl.” You are too fly to be caught up in everybody’s world except your own

Good morning beautiful people!

Even though we are still shocked, devastated and rallying  for  Trayvon Martin, it’s  great to highlight a little positive news for the family.

Jahvaris Fulton, Trayvon’s brother, recently  landed an internship at the office of Florida Representative Frederica Wilson.

From Madame Noire:

Jahvaris Fulton has a great opportunity on his hands. The older brother of Trayvon Martin is currently serving as a congressional intern for Florida Representative Frederica Wilson. Her office confirmed the news to NBC.

Fulton, according to his Twitter page, attends Florida International University in Miami FL.

Wilson’s office also said that Fulton is a part of the 5000 Roll Models of Excellence Project. The project, founded by Wilson 20 years ago, is a drop out prevention and mentoring program that serves the needs of at-risk boys in Miami-Dade schools.

We wish Jahvaris the best of luck for his bright future and know that he will carry the memory of his brother throughout his career.

How are YOU making a difference in your everyday life to fight against injustice?

SPEAK OUT!

Good look to the young Mr. Fulton. It would be great if both he and Rachel Jeantel ended up working in law enforcement, hopefully fighting the injustices that were so evident in his brother’s case.
