Riding trends is the new wave. People base things like their wardrobe and hairstyle choices on whatever is popular at the moment. However, a lot of these “trends” are rooted from different cultures; and without acknowledging or understanding the significance of them, they can be easily appropriated and seen as offensive especially when it’s your culture. So when you see a culture vulture on campus here are some ways to effectively handle it.

Be Understanding | Most of the time when people appropriate culture, they do it unknowingly. Explain to them the situation and why it is seen as inappropriate and how it bothers you personally. Never miss an opportunity to educate them.

An Open Door | Invite your friends who are unknowledgeable to cultural club meetings and events on campus. This gives them the opportunity to get a taste of something different, ask questions, and see what cultural practices are similar to popular trends.

Check Yourself | You can’t call people out on appropriation if your are appropriating as well. Do a self-check and make sure that you aren’t in a position to be called a hypocrite.
