Wake up, Class, Practice, Homework, Facebook, Bed. How many of you know this common routine? The truth is we all can be sucked into a daily routine that can make our days go by quickly instead of enjoying them. It’s pretty scary on how you can easily get pulled in to your day to day responsibilities and forget that you’re still suppose to enjoy life as well. Making sure that you still have your peace of mind in a world full of assignments, teachers , boyfriends and parents is very important. Check out different ways how to remix your daily routine!

New Environment??– So you always leave school, jump in your car, go home, grab something to eat and then get started on your homework. Well, why don’t you change up your environment?? Instead of rushing home tell the parentals that you’ll do your home work at a local café or library. Sometimes homework doesn’t feel so much like work when you’re surrounded by others who are focused too. Think about it, it’s less likely the at you’ll be distracted by the TV or your comfy bed. And who doesn’t love a tastey lemonade or passion tea while doing algebra homework??

Make Yourself Smile– Ok so I know this may sound a tad bit corny but think about it…How often do you take yourself too seriously?? Sometimes the best way to shake up your routine is to simply loosen up. So if it’s cracking up at a joke you remembered that your friend told your or doing a random dance break in the middle of your pile of homework, laughter is the best medicine in breaking up your routine. It serves as a reminder to simply have fun in life!

A Gift for Me!– Yes! You! You sometimes deserve to treat yourself. Even though parents don’t always admit how difficult it is to balance classes, extra-curricular activities, chores and a part time job, they do realize it! So yes, you deserve to give yourself a pat on the back for keeping your head above water during your busy days. So if it’s taking a walk at your fave park or grabbing your special treat at your local bakery, sometimes you just need to treat yourself!

Good morning Fly Girls!

I know, I know it’s Christmas break and the last thing you want to do is read anything half way educational due to the fact you’re about to dive into a new semester! But this info is useful & can save your life!

Students who attend certain high schools in Philadelphia will have easier access to condoms.

Due to the high rates of Sexually Transmitted Infections, Condom dispensers have been placed in schools.

The dispensers are located in the nurse’s office, and the condoms are free.

“We believe distributing condoms is part of our obligation to keep  students healthy and to remain healthy,” said school district spokesman  Fernando Gallard.  “The health department has described this as a  continued epidemic of STDs among teenagers in Philadelphia.”

Condoms have in the past been provided to students in Philadelphia as  part of wider program in which the teenagers are provided “free,  voluntary and confidential” testing for sexual diseases in their  schools, Gallard said.

It was the results of those tests that led officials to launch the  current program to distribute condoms regularly in schools instead of  once a year when the tests are administered.

Of the 130,000 student who have received testing in the last five years, some 6,500 or 5 percent of them have tested positive for diseases  including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Parents were made aware of the distribution program in October and were  given the chance to opt their children out of receiving the  prophylactics.

Read more at ABC News.

DO you think it’s a good idea to put condom dispensers in high school? Is it helping or hurting?

Should schools make condoms available?

A big part of becoming an adult is figuring out what type of career you want. In an effort to shed light on some of the options that are out there for you to consider, I plan to introduce you to different career fields by interviewing to someone who works in that industry. This week, I interviewed Eboni Long. Eboni is a professional who works in the field of social work. Here is my interview with Eboni:

What is your profession? I started my career as an Intensive In-Home Therapist, but now I am working to become a Marriage and Family Therapist.
What made you want to do it the in-home therapy? I actually didn’t know that this was what I wanted to do. Originally I wanted to be a lawyer, but I was nearing the end of my undergraduate studies when my mentor suggested the in-home therapist job because he thought I would be good at it. I didn’t even know what it was, but I pursued the lead he gave me and ended up with a position as an in-home therapist.

Describe a typical workday:

I would start my day with in-home sessions, 2-3 families per day. Then, I would go into the office to update my supervisor on the families with whom I was working. I would usually do a few hours of paper work. There would sometimes be a meeting with the entire team to discuss our most critical cases and exchange ideas on how to handle them. There would be times when I was required to go to court. If there was a child that was having problems in school, I would hold a session at the school to speak with their teachers. Since the point of this type of therapy is to get involved with all of the systems that affect the child, I was often required to be in lots of different places.
What is the goal of intensive in-home therapy?

The overarching goal is to basically help families live better. If a child was on a track to be placed outside the home, my job was to try to minimize the risk of them having to leave. If the child was already outside the home, I had to try to help them get integrated at their new home. This field started because there were kids who were placed in facilities that helped them to get better, but when they went home, all of that progress would be lost. They would go back to their old behaviors. The in-home therapy came about to try to change the environment that the child had to go back to so that they could be as successful at home as they were in the facility.
Do you believe that an advanced degree is necessary to work in this field?

I don’t believe that it is necessary, but I would recommend getting an advanced degree. If all you want to do is in-home therapy, you can do it with only a bachelor’s degree because you are working for someone who has additional credentials, and you will have to follow their treatment plans. If you choose to get a master’s degree, you can get different certifications that people with only a bachelor’s can’t get. The advantage of having the different certifications is that they will allow you to branch out and do other types of therapy. Having multiple certifications also makes you more marketable when looking for another job.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I see myself with my own marriage and family therapy practice and possibly teaching humanities related courses at the college level.
Why did you decide to change your focus from in-home therapy to marriage and family therapy? I want my primary focus to be rehabilitating the stressed relationships of couples having marital problems. I also want credentials so that I can practice under my ideas and treatment plans instead of someone else’s. When you don’t have your own credentials, you have to work under the plans that your supervisors and/or consultants think is best even if it is contrary to your thoughts. In addition, I want to have the same knowledge and skill sets that my supervisors/consultants have so that I can formulate what I believe the best course of action will be in each of my cases.
Do you have any advice for a young woman who aspires to work in the field of social work?

Yes. If this is what you want to do, you have to love it. You have to love working with people and wanting to help people because it requires a lot of you mentally, emotionally, and financially. It is mentally and emotionally draining to sit across from people who are screaming at each other or who are grieving a loss. It can be hard financially because of the additional schooling required. Also, you have to make sure you take care of yourself. If you don’t, you can’t give others the care that they need. It is imperative that you take care of yourself.
If you have more questions about the field of social work, you can contact Eboni at: ebonislong@gmail.com
The first step in pursuing your chosen career is to obtain the proper education for that career. For those of you who are interested in social work, here is a list of the top ten social work programs, according to US News, to get that advanced degree in social work that Eboni recommends:
1. University of Michigan–Ann Arbor Ann Arbor, MI
1. Washington University in St. Louis St. Louis, MO
3. University of Chicago Chicago, IL
3. University of Washington Seattle, WA
5. Columbia University New York, NY
5. University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill Chapel Hill, NC
7. University of California–Berkeley Berkeley, CA
7. University of Texas–Austin Austin, TX
9. Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, OH
10. Boston College Chestnut Hill, MA

Overcoming Holiday Hangover

By the time you read this article, you will have realized that you are:

  1. 15lbs heavier as a result of your binge holiday feasting and
  2. Broke as a result of being twenty-five dollar’d to death from buying Christmas gifts for your loved ones.

Do not be alarmed. You along, with millions of other Americans, are showing the symptoms of the Holiday Hangover. The initial symptoms are physical and financial regret, followed by a week of strategic planning for preventing being in the same position again at this time next year. The Holiday Hangover is like a virus; it cannot be treated, it has to run its course and you can only hope you don’t catch it again. The key to building immunity against this virus lies within the strategic plan you set for yourself next year.
To the over-simplistic mind, this sounds like I am encouraging New Year’s resolutions, but I am not. New Year’s resolutions are so 2012. Besides, depending on whom you ask, 65-90% of Americans break their New Year’s resolutions. So, to paraphrase one of my favorite quotes, if you want something you’ve never had, you must do something you’ve never done. This year we will simply call them GOALS. Now that’s a novel idea!! Establishing goals doesn’t have the same commercial appeal as setting New Year’s resolutions, but it is much more effective.
There is a strategy to setting goals whether it’s for the New Year or related to your personal growth. When setting goals, be sure they meet the SMART criteria.

S – First, your goal should be “Specific”. Goals should be straightforward and should specify what you intend to achieve. Your goal should be well defined.

M – Next, you want your goal to be “Measureable”. If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set.

A – Your goal needs to be “Attainable”. When identifying a goal, it needs to be something you can
realistically accomplish. If you set goals that are too far out of reach, you probably won’t fully commit to working towards them.

R – Be sure your goal is “Relevant”. This term stresses the importance of choosing goals that matter. A
relevant goal can answer yes to these questions: Does this seem worthwhile? Is this the right time? Does this match your other efforts and needs? Are you the right person?

T – Lastly, it is important to establish a timeframe for your goals. Setting a time limit for your
goals gives you a clear target to work towards. If you don’t set a timeframe, the commitment can be too vague. Achieving the goal tends not to happen because you feel you can start at any time. Without a time limit, there’s no urgency to start taking action now.

At the end of every year, millions of people vow that the next year they will be smaller, richer, smarter and braver.  But somewhere around March, 65-90% of people lose their motivation and by Thanksgiving they realize that they are still the same person from 12 months ago. In 2013, I challenge all our readers to utilize every ounce of your inner strength and embrace a level of discipline that you never have before. For 2013, set SMART goals instead of dumb resolutions and by this time next year the best gifts you will have given will be the ones you set for yourself today.
