So you heard your mom, aunt, granny talk about doing them. You’ve disregarded pamphlets about them you seen at your school, church and any program, or organization your parents make you participate in. Your mom even went so far as to stick an example of a plastic diagram in the shower to show you how to do one properly. Yes, I’m talking about giving yourself Breast Self Examination. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah you’ve always heard about it but “you’re young, free and invincible!” Hmmmm but think about if you start doing monthly breast self exams it will help you develop positive habits and allow you to learn your body so if anything were to happen you would pick up on it quickly. It’s not as hard as you think!

Check out steps from National Breast Cancer center….

In the Shower

Fingers flat, move gently over every part of each breast. Use your right hand to examine the left breast, left hand for the right breast. Check for any lump, hard knot, or thickening. Carefully observe any changes in your breasts.

Step 2
Before a Mirror

Inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides. Next, raise your arms high overhead.

Look for any changes in the contour of each breast, a swelling, a dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples. Then rest your palms on your hips and press firmly to flex your chest muscles. Left and right breasts will not exactly match—few women’s breasts do.

Step 3
Lying Down

Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. With the fingers of your left hand flat, press your right breast gently in small circular motions, moving vertically or in a circular pattern covering the entire breast.

Use light, medium, and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple; check for discharge and lumps. Repeat these steps for your left breast.

Q: “Okay, I’ve known this guy for around 18 months now, he’s like my best mate. We do everything together. He knows everything about me from the guys I’ve liked to personal family problems. It’s the same way when it comes to him he feels really comfortable telling me about what’s going on in his life. It’s weird but I realized that I’ve started to like him as more than a friend…Problem is, I’m pretty sure our relationship is friend zoned – How can I change that? I can’t just *tell* him I like him, as it’d ruin our friendship completely. Now I act super self conscious and kind of awkward. Please help!! Tips on getting out of the friend zone?? How do I not ruin the friendship? How can I tell if it’s something deeper??” Nicole,15

Answer:

It seems like you are sharing a lot of things with him, including discussing other guys. Do you think he believes he is in the friend zone, as well? You stated you are “pretty sure” you are in the friend zone. Well that sounds like an assumption and it’s not got good to assume how someone feels!

I know you probably don’t want to hear this but sometimes you got to take a chance. There is only way to get out of friend zone and that’s basically being open about how you feel. Yes, there is a chance to lose a good friendship but you must weigh the options of what you want from the relationship. Do you want to remain just friends, or do you want more?

The situation is difficult because it’s a gamble, but what do you want? You want the friend or do you want the friend in a relationship?

Of course I am not telling you what to do, I can’t do that. But I just want you to think about your feelings in regards to the situation. Can your feelings handle the current friend zone situation or not?

Hey Girls!

Do you ever pay attention to what media ads you’re taking in?  If not, maybe you should start!

According to recent reports,  African American youth between the ages of 12 and 20 are exposed to more alcohol advertising than their peers.

Its due to the fact that black youth consume more media than youth overall.

Even though African American  youth drink less than their peers, they suffer greater, harsher consequences for alcohol consumption.

From NBC News:

“But African Americans who drink seem to suffer more serious consequences, said David Jernigan, director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth, perhaps because they tend to have less access to health care and substance abuse treatment, live in poorer neighborhoods and are incarcerated more frequently.

Alcohol consumption is linked to three leading causes of death among young African Americans – homicide, suicide and accidental injury. ‘There’s rationale for being extra careful,’ said Jernigan, whose group receives funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and has put out dozens of reports on alcohol marketing to youths over the last decade.”

Do you think companies purposely target African American youth? SPEAK OUT!
