Scroll through the style diary of teen blogger, Taylor Cassidy!

What’s your name, age + city you’re from?
My name is Taylor Cassidy, I’m sixteen, and I live in St Louis!

Style is showing who you are without having to speak! Name your top 3 trends you’re feeling this season?
You’re completely right. I express and communicate through my fashion all the time.  If you see me walking down the street, you’ll know my mood by my clothes. Because fashion design is my dream once I get older, the world of fashion is in every corner of my life. Funky earrings are my thing. My friends can catch me styled with watermelon ones, some that look like faces, or even a pair that resemble Oreos. In conjunction with earrings, one can never go wrong with the simple T-shirt and skinny jeans trend. Just roll up the hem twice, tuck the shirt in (don’t forget your earrings!)and your good to go! This season I’ve really been into a good pair of sandal heels. With summer approaching, adding a pair of short- heeled sandals can make any outfit exude a bold femininity.

If you had 30 seconds to grab your 3 favorite style pieces, what would they be?
This is a hard question. I know that if I were to plan a trip where I need to pack very light, I would never forget my St. John’s Bay rain jacket that I found at the thrift store. It was a man’s extra large, but it just looked way too good on me to pass up. In addition, you will rarely see me without my Tommy Hilfiger Slip ons. They are easy to take on and off and they look like trendy tennis shoes while still having a unique touch. For me, it’s all in the details, so the last thing I would grab would be a couple of rings. If you were wearing a simple long sleeve, jeans, and a pair of those heeled sandals, adding a subtle bling will make it so memorable. There are usually super affordable ones at Forever 21.

Style inspo is everything! Who’s your ultimate fashion icon + why?
Well, first off, personal style to me is taking inspiration from each and every person, art-piece, or feeling that you may experience. However, if I had to pick one (which is so hard!) I would choose between Yara Shahidi and the character Whitley Gilbert from A Different World. Yara serves me a contemporary street style with a side of elegance with each look. She’s a great role model for young black women as well, which makes her outfits ten times better! Whitley was one of the first black women I saw on Tv when I was younger and said to myself, “I want that outfit!” Now, as a sixteen year old, I can appreciate the nostalgia and make it modern, leaving out Whitley’s (although we love her!) not-so-humble attitude!

Getting ready in the morning can be fun  but stressful  if you’re in a time crunch, what’s your go-to look if you’re in a rush?
I know this is extra, but I always pick my outfits the night before. It gives me a clearer head, I can have more fun, and it takes off one less thing to do in the morning. However, if I woke up an hour late and I have a test first period, I’d slap on a pair of Adidas sweatpants with the bottoms rolled up, tuck in a graphic tee and throw on a jacket or cardigan, wear white sneakers, and make sure to pick my favorite pair of earrings (it’s the watermelon ones by the way).
What’s your number 1 rule when it comes to style?
Listen, if you have the plainest outfit in the whole room, if you’re wearing a new garment and you’re not sure how people will react, just know that you exude an energy. How you carry yourself is an addition to your outfit. Your facial expression is an accessory. People will know that you love your outfit by the way you wear it, so my tip is to know who you are before you get dressed. It’s easy to dress like someone your not, but when you express yourself fully, that’s when you’ll feel best. Try new things and be open to change, but first have a foundation in your mind and accessorize from there.

Envy Eye? Catch Your Vibe

Friendships, like most relationships, are very dynamic and go through lots of highs and lows. One issue that friendships often face is jealousy. Although it’s difficult feeling to admit, if it isn’t handled appropriately, it can put your friendship at risk. Here are some signs you’re experiencing jealousy and how to handle it.

Good News, Bad News| When your friend shares good news with you, they are expecting nothing less than positive vibes. As a friend, your job is to give them the positive affirmation and support they are looking for because they would do the same for you. If their good news doesn’t genuinely spark joy, it could be due to jealousy. Instead, figure out why. Is it because they achieved something before you did? Remember: Their accomplishments don’t diminish how far you’ve come and the hard work you put in.

Space| Sometimes when you’re jealous, you limit your time with this friend. You don’t want to stand by their side as they are achieving goals because it makes you feel less than. Remember: Your friend wants to share their successes with you, which is why they call you a friend. When you reach your personal goals, you’re going to want them by your side to share in your own glory.

Clingy| Jealousy also sparks when your bestie makes a new friend. You find yourself wanting to be by their side more often, calling and texting like a maniac. It’s quite the opposite of pushing yourself away. You are subliminally sending the message that you refuse to be replaced. Remember: You have a place in your friend’s life. They never let you go, they are just embracing new faces. You might like this person too.

Friendships and bonds in high school differ from those in college. Each are significant but also built on different foundations. You’ve most likely known a lot of your high school friends since elementary school and saw them everyday since. You all grew up together. Your college friends don’t have the same history with you, but you know them just as well. The quality of your friendships will evolve as you evolve too.

Different foundations | Like stated, your high school friendships are built on time, whereas, your college friendships are built on experience, which is why you may feel more connected with them. These are the people who you’ve lived with, shared meals with, and have navigated college life with and what it means to be independent. That builds a deep friendship.

Maturity | Some of your high school friends, especially the ones that decided not to attend college, are still stuck in that mindset. College allows you to mature and think about your goals for the future. You tend to want to surround yourself with people who are on that same wavelength.

Friendship Beyond | College friends are more likely to be life long friends because these are the people you chose to come into your life. You’re sort of forced to be together in high school. College allows you to surround yourself with people you like based on your major, clubs, sports, etc. and you live within walking distance of them. This friendship is bound to last forever.

Intense ambition, undeniable speed + pure focus, has North Carolina A&T State University’s track star, Kayla White turning heads with a solid smile all season long!

Hailing from Miami, the dynamic Aggie broke the world record for the fastest indoor 200m at the prestigious Tyson Invitational this year. She then went on to set a MEAC Championship record by winning the 100m with a time of 10.96 seconds + won the 200m at 22.52 seconds, the fastest in the nation this year!

“If you love what you do, if you’re passionate about doing it, no one can take that from you,” Kayla states while conquering this season!

Let’s get to know Kayla a little better…

Hailing from Miami, when did you first take an interest in track + field and what made you want to take it seriously?

When I first took an interest in track and field, I decided I didn’t like it after two days of practice. I eventually picked it back up in high school in my junior year and that’s when I started to take it serious. When I realize I’m good at something I make sure to commit to it.  I realized my potential and knew I had to lean into my natural talent.

Clocking the world’s fastest time in the 200 M dash is simply A-MAZ-ING! How did you feel once you finished the race + what was your reaction when you realized your time?

Finishing that race with a PR I was pretty happy! I walked off the track, went to get dressed and cool down, when my coaches ran up to me. They gave me a huge hug of congratulations. I didn’t know it was a world lead until they told me and that’s  when all of my social media started to blow up. It truly was an amazing feeling and it still doesn’t feel real!

Being a proud Aggie at North Carolina A+T, how has the support of your team, school + coach motivated you to step into your potential?

The support of my team, school, coaches and alumni has been there since my freshman year. Being on a team where everyone has one common goal which is to win has definitely helped me step into my potential as an athlete and as a role model. Without them pushing me on and off the track I wouldn’t be the athlete that I am today.

Track + field is such a mental sport, how do you mentally prep before a race? Best piece of advice from your coach?

The way I mentally prepare for a meet is that I put my phone on DND and try to block out any distractions. I listen to my ‘Meet Day’ playlist from the moment I wake up until after I run. The best piece of advice that my coach has given me is to always have fun whenever you step on the track.

Being young, juggling responsibilities while walking towards your dreams can sometimes get to be a bit overwhelming, how do you regroup and motivate yourself when you’re feeling a little defeated?

Whenever I start to feel overwhelmed or a little stressed I like to take mental days for myself. So I’ll probably take myself to the movies or to dinner, or get my nails done.

We are all about empowerment, what does EMPOWERMENT mean to you?

What empowerment means to me is uplifting and supporting everyone around you.

What advice would you give girls who want to follow their dreams and passions but are nervous or intimidated?

The advice I would give them is if you love what you do, if you’re passionate about doing it, no one can take that from you! So embrace your talents and have fun!

Summer is finally here and we’re ready to live our best lives! We’re ready for the late nights, beach days, cookouts, etc. The catch is that we’re also trying to mind our wallets. Just because summer is here doesn’t mean that we need to let go of our budgeting tactics. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the next few months without blowing through your savings and here’s how:

(Giphy.com)

Skip the Coffee Shop

We know you’re a regular at your local Starbucks, but it’s time to go on a hiatus this summer. Switch out your favorite Starbucks order and opt for water, the best form of hydration. Make it fancy, add some fruit and mint leaves! It tastes amazing, and your skin will benefit from it too!

Get Your Own Glow

Body Lava is going to be a big thing this summer. Everyone wants to glow and sparkle while out in the sun. You can easily make your own by adding your favorite highlight to a bottle of baby oil. Shake and you’re done!

Staycation

It happens so often where your friends all want to take a group vacation, but everyone is broke. It’s the worst. Try a staycation, which is a vacation that doesn’t require any traveling and can happen at your house. Facemasks and mocktails poolside or chill sleepover are both great ideas.

Becoming emotionally invested in a relationship can hinder your view of reality. Like they say, love is blind. The person that you think would be the most genuine could actually be hurting you emotionally. A lot of times when you want something to work so badly, you miss all the signs telling you how much of a player they actually are. We’ve all been there, so here are some major signs to look for.

He flirts with other girls

It’s one thing if he flirts with other girls, but to do it in front of you is another story. It’s his way of telling you that he has no respect for you, which means the relationship needs to be over.

He makes you feel guilty, no apologies

Often times he wants you to do the things he wants. When you don’t comply, he makes you feel guilty about it. He offers no apologies for making you feel bad or anything he does for that matter. He’s got to go.

(Giphy.com)

You don’t hit my line no more/excuses

He’ll promise to call or text you, but time passes and before you know it he’s ghosted you all day. When you finally get a hold on him, He’s got excuse after excuse. This behavior is intolerable and it’s time to break it off.

Double standards

He can hang with the guys for a night out but you can’t hang with the girls? It’s called a double standard, which is detrimental to a relationship. It’s also something you cannot let slide because he shouldn’t be putting restrictions on your life. Time to say goodbye.

College Culture Shock?

Daily Blog, Latest | by — April 10, 2019

Yay! You made it to college, a pivotal point in your life. The experience is brand new and much needed for growth. It can be pretty uncomfortable too, especially when you are spending your four years in an unfamiliar environment surrounded by a noticeably different crowd.

Being a minority on campus can bring another level angst to the college experience. You may find yourself missing home more often because your culture isn’t represented on campus in a way that makes you feel confident. Those feelings are valid. There are so many ways to bring that level of comfort to campus. Take a look below for some tips!

(Giphy.com)

Go best friend, that’s my best friend!

You’re not the only minority student on campus and you’re definitely not the only minority student feeling this way. Making friends in college with all different kinds of students is important, but having a close-knit friend group that consists of other minorities will really help you through. They understand your issues and can relate to you in a way the majority cannot.

Welcome to our cluuub!

It will behoove you to take the Student Activities Fair seriously. Find the clubs that are lead by minorities and have a mission to bring more representation to campus. Their initiatives are most likely related to your own issues and desires. They are working towards a good cause, it gives you a chance to make friends, and looks great on your resume!

You’ve Got Mail

If you’ve found your crew and are still feeling uncomfortable, a care package from home could be what you need. Maybe there are certain mementos from home that could make you feel better. For example, if you have a favorite snack at home, but can’t find it on campus, ask your parents to send some to you (maybe throw in some extra for your friends). Maybe there are some products that you like or movies you love that can be mailed to school. The idea is to bring the comfort of home to campus with you.

Scroll through the style diary of college blogger, Carri Rogers!

What’s your name + the city you’re from?

My name is Carrington Rodgers. I am From Garner, NC. But I currently live in Greensboro, NC and attend the NC Agricultural & Technical State University.

Style is showing who you are without having to speak! Name your top 3 trends you’re feeling this season?

Mom Jeans, Oversized Anything and Natural Hair. Mom Jeans are a staple in my wardrobe. I found my favorite pair at a thrift store. You can dress them up or down and the look will never disappoint. The key to the perfect oversized look is the men’s section. Do not hesitate to look outside of your designated section to find the look you are going for. Natural Hair has been the staple of my look for a while now. The styles are endless, but my favorite by far is my fro. It adds an edge to every look that I could not possibly get from a piece of clothing.

If you had 30 seconds to grab your 3 favorite style pieces, what would they be?

Jean Jackets, Gold Chain, Hoop Earrings.  Jean jackets are a versatile garment that can be worn over a shirt, or even as a shirt. I could wear the same denim jacket for a week and style it a different way everyday. Why waste money on pieces that can only be worn one way when you could get the most out of every garment in your closet. A Gold Chain just adds a minimalist touch to any outfit. It accessorizes without doing too much. Hoop Earrings can take any look from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. They add a bit of personality to each outfit that is unmatched.

Style inspo is everything! Who’s your ultimate fashion icon + why?

Most people might name a celebrity when asked this question but my inspirations are my mom and sisters. Being the youngest, I always wanted to keep up with them, whether that be putting on some heels with my jeans or rocking some of my sister’s clothes. I aspired to have the unique ability they portray to pull a look together in a matter of seconds. As I grow, I’m learning their secret is confidence.

Getting ready in the morning can be fun but stressful if you’re in a time crunch, what’s your go-to look if you’re in a rush?

In college, it is so easy to just throw on anything to go to class. My go to recently has been two piece outfits because the look is already put together for you. Not having to put a whole look together saves a lot of time and energy. Just add a few accessories and you’re good to go!

What’s your number 1 rule when it comes to style?

As I said before, the key is confidence. Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence and a smile. Not every look is meant for every person, so don’t always aspire to look like others. Instead, aspire to have others wish they could look like you. There is only one you, act like it! Be bold, don’t be afraid to step out of the box, who knows you could start the next fashion trend.

Prom Meltdown? It’s Handled.

Prom is one of the most important and memorable days of your young life. It’s the moment you and your friends have been looking forward to since the first day of senior year. However, the build up to the big day can be stressful because finding the right dress, the right guy, a hairstyle that slays, etc. is a lot of work. The important thing is to start early. That way you can be well prepared and stress free. Below are four reasons it’s important to be an early bird with prom preparation.

The Dress | Finding a dress is the most important thing when it comes to the prom checklist. If you’re able to get that part done early, you’ll be doing yourself a huge favor and will save yourself from tons of stress. You’ll also have time to spare in case you need alterations.

The Guy| Securing your date early is another vital key. You want to get him before anyone else does. There’s nothing wrong with asking a guy to prom (or going with your girl squad)!

The Makeup | It’s important that you get a makeup consultation before committing to a look. Getting this done early allows you time to be able to determine your look based on your dress and whatever is trending.

The Ride| This is the most difficult thing to plan, especially when you’re coordinating with a lot of people. Starting early will give everyone plenty of time to get their plans together and pitch in their share for the limo!
